An Open Opera for the City
The project reimagines the relationship between the historic opera house and its extension, creating a balanced architectural ensemble and a new urban destination in the heart of Berlin. By removing later additions from the listed building and introducing a compact new volume along Glinkastraße, the proposal defines a high-quality public realm and a new opera square that strengthens the institution’s presence within the city.
The extension consolidates production, rehearsal, storage, and public functions into a compact and highly interconnected structure. A light-filled circulation spine links the new building to the historic opera, creating a sequence of dynamic spaces with visual connections across different levels. Public routes, transparent facades, and accessible rooftop terraces open the opera to visitors, revealing the creative and production processes typically hidden behind the scenes.
Together, the historic building and the extension form an open cultural ensemble that extends beyond performance spaces. The new opera square, active ground-floor uses, and panoramic rooftop facilities transform the opera into a vibrant civic landmark, reinforcing its role as both a cultural institution and an integral part of Berlin’s urban life.
